I live in the city of Orange and at the center of the city is a wonderful old town area known formally as the Orange Plaza or more commonly, the Orange Traffic Circle. At the center of Plaza Park stands a beautiful fountain from the 1930's called the "New Electric Fountain" (the original Victorian historic fountain is now located at the Orange public library) and people wandering about generally pause by the fountain to observe its dancing waters and take a moment to reflect. The fountain has a celebratory feel though it stands in quiet elegance. Its luminous cascades of water are small in stature yet full of energy and spirit. The atmosphere around the fountain is often times quite jovial; children dipping their fingers in the chilly water and then giggling and flitting about, dogs plunging their tongues in for a refreshing treat, college students basking in the soothing warmth of the sun not easily accessible from within their stuffy university classrooms, and adults enjoying the comfort of the park’s benches to settle their tummies after a delicious meal and rousing evening out.
At night, the fountain is lit from below with glowing colored bulbs. The water bounces through the beams of color and the neighboring buildings' light sources reflect on the pool below. The color enhances the celebratory effect and engages a sense of community, holiday, and festivity. When I am near the fountain or in the area surrounding, I feel an amazing sense of peace and inspiration accompanied by the pride of living in a historical town that preserves its relics and sustains its uniqueness. As Alex stated in week one, "I love where I live!" ;)
I was there just last night as I am designing a show at Chapman and was struck by how well the entire circle is lit - I used to live there many years ago and they have really kept the quaint wonderfully welcoming feel in that area

Love these photos. I too, enjoy that aspect of Orange (having its own identity and preserving it) and I love how their lights accentuate that. : )
